California: Schwarzenegger plants Ginkgo tree

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger along with Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Wangari Maathai, and Shaklee CEO Roger Barnett planted a Ginkgo tree on the grounds of Shaklee's Pleasanton, Calif., headquarters on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in honor of Earth Day and Shaklee's Million Trees, Million Dreams program.
Maathai is the "global ambassador" for the company's "A Million Trees, A Million Dreams" campaign. Her group, based in Kenya, started in 1977 with tree plantings and is a way to empower women by getting them involved with the environment. "We owe a lot to trees," she said. "We ought to have a lot of respect for the trees."

Ginkgoholic in Vancouver, WA

Daniel reports on his blog about his care of Ginkgo trees growing in his garden:
"Also collected some Ginkgo seeds and cleaned them up. I'll use the "squirrel method" this time - plant them around the yard and forget about them. Some might surprize me with little trees next summer.......I am somewhat of a ginkgoholic. There are 3 seed-grown young trees planted in the yard, with intent to grow into full sized trees, and multiple seedlings in flower pots......"

Lichen on bark

We have inherited in our new garden a Ginkgo Biloba Tree. It has apparently been growing there for at least 15 years. It sits at the bottom of the garden in Northern France facing South. The tree is not a very good looking specimen and has a lot of lichen on the bark.We would like to improve the quality of this unusual tree. Should we attempt to wash off the lichen and can we feed the area in which it grows?

Question by David and June Smith.

Tokyo: design mistake Ginkgo badge

The original badge produced by the Tokyo Bureau of Sewerage, top, and the redesigned version.

Tokyo metropolitan government's Sewage Bureau spent about 34 million yen having a new set of badges made for staff uniforms after a problem was found with the logo on an original batch of 20,000. The new uniforms were ordered during the spring, after the design got a go-ahead from managers. However, it was noticed later that the uniforms' silicone badges, which bear the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Ginkgo leaf crest and office name, also contained a small wavy blue line, designed to represent cleaning water. This was deemed a violation of the bureau's basic design manual, and new badges were subsequently ordered at a total cost of 34 million yen.

Koi and Ginkgo

Lisamarina writes:
"This is a watercolor (ed.Cor) of a Koi, in a pool with my favorite leaf, design-wise, the ginkgo. All I know right now is that this koi is going to be bright orange, with spots of some kind, which I think will contrast nicely with the blue of the water, and the green & gold of the ginkgo leaves. "
You can read about the process here, also click on this watercolor there to see an enlargement.

A new Ginkgo baby!

Remy writes in a forum:
"There they were, GINKGO TREES!!! *gasps* all of my tree-hugging inhibitions fell down and i almost hugged them!.. but something at the base of one of the trees made me stop as i went in for the hug. There it was, a young and fragile sprout of ginkgo, swaying in the wind!....
Heres my baby that i just replanted, im not really a green thumb but if the ginkgo tree survived atomic bombing, we should get along just fine!"
